The Width of a Season

2022 Exhibition

As a painter, my practice always begins outdoors in the landscapes I love. I have kept sketchbooks all my life, with one always in my pocket, as observational drawing - and painting - is at the very heart of my work.

After initial work in the sketchbook, visiting and revisiting until I have sufficient information to become as one with the location, I will move on to painting, either on paper or canvas. Working on site gives an immediacy to painting. My aim is to use this energy in a series of marks and colours to express a direct sense of place.

I exhibit in my own gallery in Lavenham, and occasionally with other artist friends in special one-off exhibitions. A carefully curated collection of paintings is available as high quality limited edition prints through leading publisher Aquarelle (beyondthepage.co.uk).

This year I am celebrating 50 years since the start of my career as a student at the Eastbourne College of Art and Design, studying printmaking and illustration, where I was fortunate to have my path guided by influential tutors Robert Tavener, Trevor Kemp and Alison Smith.
